So much of what is currently in magazines and on the television deals
with changing the look of a room on a grand scale that is
redecorating fully, refurnishing, adding in new flooring, curtains etc..
All of these things look fantastic and do create great results
but cost a lot and create a lot of hassle for the homeowner while the
work is being completed.
Obviously there is a time and place for this work and it would be foolish
to say otherwise but I find that a more and more popular
service my clients request is that of home styling rather than full interior design.
Home styling is a service where you redress rooms to give a
fresh new look and lease of life to a room with
minimal redecoration involved quick and effective results.
Many rooms can be totally altered with simple yet effective changes to
accessories and soft furnishings while paying
close attention also to the useage of the room, its layout and its contents.
If you are unhappy with the way a room looks and feels
you may consider full redesign essential but home
styling may be all thats required.
Firstly look at how your room is used this will help to define the rooms
purpose and make it easier to see what needs to change
to make it work fully for you. Ask yourself the following questions
· What do you do in this room? · What, therefore is needed in this space to enable you to
complete the tasks you want to do in there?
· What items are stopping this space working for you? · Are too many things trying to vie for attention? · Is there space to move around? · What about the colour scheme, is it suitable for the type of activity taking place?
This will often lead to decluttering the room and changing its
layout note that nothing so far has been purchased, you have
merely used what you already have to make the space work harder
for you (This can be achieved with the help of a home stylist if required
as they can see exactly what changes need to be made this is a
particularly useful service if you have lived in your
home for so long you cant see a different way of doing things).
After this stage the room should feel more welcoming and inviting you
will only have what you really need in the room so all the clutter that
everyone has built up in their homes over time will have gone, and you
now have more space to add those accessories etc..
that will create the new fresh look you are after. This is where the fun starts!
I recommend looking at the following items to make the biggest changes in the
most cost effective ways (this also means that you can change the look of a
room on a yearly basis if you like without breaking the bank). Things that can
be changed easily (given the correct backdrop of
colour scheme, flooring, furniture etc.._) are as follows:-
Curtains, Rugs, Artwork, Accessories, Cushions,
Throws, Table Runners, Lamps, Bedding etc
A great tip that I also suggest to people who love to change the
look of a room is to have 2 sets of accessories one for spring/summer
and one for autumn/winter. Having light fabrics and pale colours for the
spring and heavy textured fabrics in deeper colours for the autumn that
way the room will work whatever the season you are in and you wont get
bored living with the same scheme for years (many people get bored
of schemes within a few years, and therefore spending a
huge amount on one may not be cost effective for you
another reason why home styling works for so many).
