Article - Getting the layout right

How do you find the right layout for your rooms?

Finding the right layout for each room in your home can
be fraught with indecision. You don’t want to waste time
moving everything around only to find that it worked better as
it was, or that it still doesn’t work for you and your lifestyle –
and similarly – you don’t want to purchase a great item of furniture
that simply doesn’t fit into your room when it arrives. The right layout can
make a fantastic design scheme work, whereas the wrong layout will
always make any design scheme feel unfinished and wrong.
This is the reason why all interior designers tend to look at the
layout of a room and how it is used before any other part of the design.

How many of us have spotted the “perfect” sofa in the showroom
only to find out that it fills your room once in situ? Not only has this
process been a waste of your time, effort and money, but you have to
now start the whole process again.

The easiest thing to do is take a few tips from the designers.

It may sound like a lot of work, but it will pay dividends if you can
follow these two pointers when thinking about designing the rooms in your house:-

1.         Draw out a scale floor plan of the room you are looking at purchasing
items for or moving items around in. Mark on the plan any
doors and their swing, and any other items that are not
movable such as fireplaces and built in furniture. Once you
have this you can then measure out the pieces of furniture that you
are keeping and create a scale template of these (remember to
label each one so you know whats what!). Have each piece of furniture
on a separate piece of paper (this will help with point two). This
will show you how much space you will have left for any new
furniture you decide to purchase. This is especially useful if you
are sourcing items from the internet, as you will be given
measurements online that you can then easily check against as to
whether they will fit the space you have. You can then know for certain
whether the item will fit, and avoid costly mistakes (even by drawing a
scale template of your new furniture and moving it around with
the rest of your furniture on the plan will help you gauge what you need).

2.                  You may have worked out that all the furniture will fit into the room,
but when it has been put on the plan and you look at how you will live in the room,
it still may not feel right. The second part of deciding on layout is to think
about the way the room will be used by you and your family as well.
For example - If you are looking at a lounge, you may want to ask the following questions:-
     i.  Is there adequate seating for everyone who
uses the room, or for guests?
ii.      Can you walk around the room to
windows and doors easily?
iii.      Is the seating suitable for
having conversations?
iv.      Is the seating pointed at a focal
point (not necessarily the TV!)
   v.      Are you making the most of the view
from the windows, or from any features in
the room – or is the furniture hiding them?

All these questions will help you find out the best layout for your room
 – as this is a very personal choice as its your space and
you are the one who will live in it and know what you need from the space.

Doing this planning is the best way to ensure that once you do start moving
your furniture around your rooms, you will be confident that the
finished result will work for you, and will feel
like your home. A little preparation goes a long way!
