Make your home work for you

There are no hard and fast rules when designing your homes
interior whatever works for you is in the end the best interior design
you could have. The only time that this isnt necessarily the case is
when you are selling your home, and if you arent thinking about this in
the foreseeable future then really the worlds your oyster in terms of design.
Obviously when you are selling you need to show a home as your buyers
would want to see it, so that they can imagine themselves in the
space so it may not suit your needs quite so well.

When planning your home, it is worth taking some time listing the following:-
?xml:namespace>
· What activities do you need space for?
· Who lives in the space?
· Do you need space for frequent guests, working from home etc..
· How much space do you currently have? a rough floor plan can
help you with this part and is crucial in getting your mind around
how to utilise your space the best as it can show which
rooms link well, and help you to visualise other ways to use the rooms.

Then, its really up to your imagination. Who says a lounge has to be on
the ground floor? If you have a fantastic view from the first
floor why not turn your home upside down it already
works for many people.

If you need an office space consider under the stairs where
space is often wasted, or convert a garage or basement,
adding a room in the garden the list really
is endless if you brainstorm the space you have.

Room useage has never been more flexible today we are more
likely to have dinner parties in the more informal setting of a
kitchen/diner than a more formal dining room therefore why not
change a designated dining rooms useage? Knick through to make
a large kitchen diner, create a family room, a TV room
(to ensure the lounge stays more for socialising), a garden room and much more.

Really looking at how you use the space can make even the
most standard home something really special and unique.
Dont stay within the boundaries of what is
considered normal and you will really open up your options.

This method also works well when you are thinking of moving. One of
the main reasons to move is wanting more space
and that space could actually be right under your nose all the time:-
?xml:namespace>
· Do you have space to extend extensions can cost around
the same as moving house and can add extra value to your home in the process.
· Could a conservatory work for you?
· Do you have a guest bedroom? If so ask yourself how often it
is actually used most people realise that a guest room would be better
served if it doubled up as something else so it gets more frequent use by the
family. What about creating a home office, a teenagers
lounge, and having a sofa bed rather than a permanent bed?

The main thing to think about is to think outside the box. However
if you are finding it hard to imagine using your space in any other
way than how you use it at present, get someone in to help with this
process you will be surprised at what can be achieved.
Plan your space well and you will be living in a
home that works for you before you know it.
